Toilet Partition FAQ’s

At one time or another, you may have been a patron in a multi-unit restroom, and other than cleanliness and odor, perhaps you didn’t give anything else about the room much thought.  However, there is a lot to consider when you are designing, building, or expanding commercial bathroom space.  Below are some important questions to consider and the answers you need to make this project fit your budget; be in line with all state and federal regulations, and make patrons feel that they have entered a clean and ethically pleasing environment.

How much does it cost to install bathroom partitions?

The cost of bathroom partitions will vary depending on the type of material that is chosen.  For instance, stainless steel partitions for a bathroom start at about $700 per stall.  On the other hand, solid plastic bathroom partitions will only run about $400 per stall.  Based on the material and the size of the bathroom, the partitions could range from $500 to over $2,000 for the entire bathroom.

What is a phenolic toilet partition?

Pressure and heat is applied to layers of paper that have been doused in man-made resin.  As part of this process, a chemical reaction, referred to as “polymerization”, happens which transforms the material into a high-density thermosetting plastic.

This is the type of material that you want if your public bathroom should look high-end and also be able to tolerate heavy traffic.  Basically phenolic is durable and good-looking and a great selection for commercial toilet partitions.

How do you calculate toilet partition?

The calculation process depends greatly on the layout of the restroom.  For example, if the layout is recessed, then the measurement is from wall to wall sides, the side wall to the centerline of the divider panel, the opening for the door, the back wall to the stall door, and the width of the stile.

The corner layout is the same as the recessed, but you will also need to measure the distance from the centerline of the panel to the outer portion of the panel.

The alcove layout is simply the measurement from side to side walls, back to front, stile width, and the door opening.

What are bathroom stalls made of?

There are several material options available; however, “powder coated steel” is the most common used in commercial bathrooms in the United States.  Not only is “powder coated steel” durable and attractive; but it is also an affordable choice.

“Solid plastic” is a great option for heavy trafficked areas such as public parks and schools.  This material is environmentally friendly, sanitary, and requires little to no maintenance.  Not only it is water resistant, but it is also resistant to rust, mildew, and impacts.  Due to its durability, high humid conditions and corrosive environments, such as salt water, makes this a perfect option for public facilities at beach resorts.

Stainless steel is considered to be the most costly material for bathroom stalls; however, they are also the most durable and their visually pleasing shine remains for a very long time.

Why would toilet partitions need to be replaced?

Mold would be the number one reason that partitions in restrooms need to be replaced.  Depending on the location, over time, the interior of the partition maybe exposed to moisture and humidity and dangerous mold could build up and ultimately causing a health hazard.

Yes, all public bathroom facilities, including urinals, need to be separated by a wall (partition) and a lockable door that ensures privacy.  There are a few exceptions to this general rule and they include:

  1. Single occupant bathrooms.
  2. Toilets located with Group I-3 housing areas.
  3. Child care facilities that contain two or more water closets may be allowed to have one without an enclosed compartment.

What are the dimensions of an ADA bathroom?

The entire stall should be 60 inches x 60 inches.  The common door width of a handicap stall is 36 inches which is much larger than standard stalls.  These stalls are often situation at the back of the room so that they can span the width of the far wall and allow for the space to be naturally larger.

To abide by the ADA regulations, there must be 60 inches of circular clear floor space for turning a wheelchair.  In smaller bathrooms, this turning space can be “T” shaped so that the wheelchair occupant can make a 3-point turn.

Also, there should be at least 17 inches of space under a sink or other bathroom fixture.  Also, the space under the sink should be at least 8 inches deep.
